Peak District

Headstone Tunnel in the Peak District National Park is now part of the Monsal Trail for walkers and cyclists using part of the former Midland Railway line between Buxton and Bakewell that was closed in 1968 by the Labour Minister for Transport Barbara Castle. At 533 yards (487 metres) Headstone Tunnel is the longest on the current Monsal Trail although there are future plans to extend beyond Bakewell through the 1,058 yards (967 metres) Haddon Tunnel.

It’s late July, apparently the height of summer, and I’m huddled under an umbrella wearing a coat and woolly hat in pouring rain at Monsal Head in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire. Headstone Viaduct is now part of the Monsal Trail for walkers and cyclists using part of the former Midland Railway line between Buxton and Bakewell that closed in 1968 including 4 tunnels over 400 metres long- Headstone Tunnel, Cressbrook Tunnel, Litton Tunnel and Chee Tor Tunnel. In the distance the spectacular Monsal Dale is mostly obscured by low cloud and mist. I resisted the temptation to use the new Dehaze feature in Lightroom and Photoshop opting to preserve how the scene actually looked.
