North Yorkshire

The green huts of the South Gare Fishermans Huts Association against the industrial backdrop of the Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) Redcar Steel Works. Whether or not it is caused by pollution from the various industries at Teesside the light here has amazing qualities with simple clouds taking on surreal magenta and golden hues depending on the time of day.

The Victorian pier at Saltburn by the Sea in North Yorkshire captured at dusk. Lights from the superb local Fish and Chip restaurant illuminate the cast iron trestles and the support timbers of the only remaining pleasure pier on the North East coast while head torches of the fishermen on the end of the 1869 structure reflect in the water. On the horizon are the many ships anchored in the North Sea waiting to enter Teesport.

An orange glow as the sun vainly tries to break through the clouds of industry at Paddy’s Hole on the River Tees at the northernmost tip of North Yorkshire. A location made famous by Joe Cornish, this tiny harbour on the man made South Gare has an eerie atmosphere with a backdrop of heavy industry including the Tata and Sahaviriya Steelworks, the former ICI Wilton Chemical Plant now the NEPIC Cluster, the partially mothballed Teesside Power Station and the nuclear power station at Hartlepool, Teesport (the third largest in the UK), Teeside GasPort and the former Teesside Oil Refinery now just used as an oil terminal. Despite the industrial nature of the area it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with the nearby Seal, Coatham and Bran sands being rich in flora and fauna as well as being home to a wide range of birds and also seals.

Riveaulx Abbey (as seen on BBC’s Secret Britain) near Helmsley in North Yorkshire reflected in a tiny puddle. The tilting rear screen on the FujiFilm X-T1 came in very handy here as I was able to place the camera on the ground without having to lay in the mud myself.
